The lovely ladies from My Memories have given me the chance to finally get around to do some digital scrapbooking with the My Memories scrapbook suite. Hoorah! Scrapbooking for the digital age…it’s about time. Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy dabbling in a bit of scrapbooking, I love sourcing cute stickers, cut outs and so on to use. But it just feels like I just never get around taking my digital pictures to the photo house to get them developed. They just sit there on a folder on my desktop labelled ‘Develop for scrapbooking’. ‘Just go do it’, I tell myself but I always find it is always on my ‘to do’ pile. But what this software does is pretty neat, it’s scrapbooking online – No scissors, no paper mess, no procrastinating and forgeting to print out photos and best of all, it all sits on your computer. Simple.

My Memories Suite Version 2.0: The Review

Being my first time using a digital scrapbooking software, I decided to choose one of the pre-designed templates ‘Sweet baby girl’ in case it was all too overwhelming for me. Once I arranged the order of my pages, I was ready to insert my photos of one of my girlfriends baby shower.

I decided to ‘fast fill’ the images which means all my chosen images would be automatically inserted into all the scrapbooking page frames – woo. If you have more patience than I do, there is an option to insert pictures individually as you like.

What’s great is, once I did the fast fill, an option came up asking me to choose the order I wanted the pictures – this is great if you’re trying to build a bit of a narrative or trying to reflect the events of the day. My images were easily uploaded to my ‘Baby Shower’ album with my pictures inserted into the frames. The program is smart enough to fit portrait images with matching frames – very cool.

Everything in the scrapbooking software is pretty much customisable. You can change fonts, add text, add frames, add decorative bits, photos and you can reshape, resize and rescrap to your heart’s content. Similarly to photo editing programs, you can edit all the components and when you right click, can even manage layers to make sure the overlapping graphics that you want are on top.

What I do think is a nice addition to the digital scrapbook software is some of the built in photo editing options you can do. This means you don’t need to be a Photoshop wiz to be able to play around by editing, cropping or doing some funky photo effects like sepia and flipping images. There are some helpful notes that remind you that stretching certain graphics means you could lose some quality when printing.

What I really love about doing things digitally means that you can share your web albums with your friends and family and also export them to DVD, video CD and iPod. Also, I thought it was pretty cool that you can create ‘hot spots’ with audio and video.

Once you finish your scrapbook, you can hit ‘view album’ and it will show you a few different ways you can view your album. My favourite is the ‘photo album’ as it flicks through your pages, like you would a regular book.
